Why consider
going non-chlorine? |
There’s
no question that chlorine was
one of humankind’s greatest
discoveries. The use of chlorine
has reduced the spread of disease
and helped to extend our life
expectancy.
In recent years, however,
we’ve learned that chlorine
is a carcinogen. In swimming
pools and spas, many people
don’t like the chemical odor
and taste of chlorinated water,
not to mention its bleaching
effect on swimwear. Special
precautions must be taken to
transport, handle and store
chlorine safely. And those are
just the minor complaints!
Chlorine
can shorten the life of equipment
and vinyl liners. It dissipates
quickly and therefore requires
vigilant testing and maintenance.
Swimmers can develop reactions
to chloramines, which are chlorine
by-products, ranging from skin
irritation to respiratory. Some
research studies have even linked
chlorine use in indoor pools
to asthma!
Chlorine-free “alternative”
products like PristineBlue®offer
many solutions to the problems
of chlorine. While protecting
against bacteria and algae,
they are non-bleaching and safer
to store and handle. They are
gentler to equipment, eyes and
skin. Many, like PristineBlue®
are odorless and tasteless.
Most
important, however, is the reduced
maintenance chlorine alternatives
can offer. Instead of testing
and adding chlorine several
times a week or even daily,
alternative products require
attention just once a week or
once every two weeks.
When considering no-chlorine
in your pool or spa, look for
products that are EPA registered.
Products that bear an EPA registration
number have undergone extensive
third-party testing to prove
their effectiveness. Also, try
to find out how long the product
has been on the market.
Quality
brands stand the test of time,
while inferior ones often fail
in two to three years.
“To chlorine or not to chlorine?”
is a good question. Ask your
friends, neighbors and coworkers
about their experiences with
chlorine and chlorine free alternatives.

Size does matter...
know your pool volume! |
One of the
most important pieces of information
you can have for your pool is
the water volume in gallons.
Whether you’re adjusting pH,
shocking, or adding PristineBlue®,
knowing the accurate water volume
is essential to make sure you’re
adding the right amount of product.
Using too much or too little
of some products can actually
cause a problem to develop or
get worse!
To
determine water volume in a
rectangular pool, multiply length
times width times average depth
in feet to calculate cubic feet.
Then multiply cubic feet times
7.5 to determine gallons of
water.
In a round or oval pool, multiply
length times width times average
depth times 5.9 to calculate
number of gallons. |

Overdosing: too
much of a good thing |
|
You’ve probably heard the expression,
“You can’t get too much of a
good thing.”
In the case of PristineBlue®,
that expression isn’t true.
Too much PristineBlue® can indeed
be a bad thing. Overdosing with
PristineBlue® can cause cloudy
water, discoloration in the
filter, and even staining of
the pool. Sometimes when you’ve
overdosed, your test kit looks
like there’s very little or
even no PristineBlue® in the
water at all!
Avoid overdosing with PristineBlue®
by taking the following precautions:
- Don’t test or add PristineBlue®
more often than once every
two weeks.
- Make sure you know the
volume of your pool. Overestimating
the volume can cause you
to add too many chemicals.
- Measure the PristineBlue®
when you add it. Don’t just
pour it in straight from
the bottle.
If you suspect you’ve overdosed
the pool, send PristineBlue®
an
email
or call technical support specialists
at 800-257-9283. We can take
you through the steps to diagnose
your water for an overdose and
guide you through what it takes
to fix it.
|
|
|
|
|
NOTE: Do Not add PristineBlue more often than
every two weeks. When PristineBlue is topped
off more often than once every two weeks, you spend
more money than is necessary on PristineBlue and
risk overdosing and staining the pool. |
