Hayward Filters
Cartridge or element filtration has been available for a relatively long time, but Hayward has recently made achievements in this technology which has caused a rapid growth of acceptance within this media choice.

Cartridge filters are constructed of a fiber material which is very effective in removing dirt and suspended matter when water passes through it.

Features not available in either Sand or DE filters include:

  • Compact, lightweight, easy-to-install and no backwashing required
  • More effective filtration area in a very compact system
  • Less maintenance and longer filter runs between cleanings

 How a Cartridge Filter Works

  1. Single Locking Knob securely fastens filter head to filter tank, eliminating clamps or bolts.

  2. Filter Head provides easy access to cartridge element. May be rotated to conveniently position pressure gauge and manual air relief valve.

  3. Heavy-Duty Filter Tank injection molded of high strength PermaGlass XL™ for dependable, corrosion-free performance.

  4. Automatic Air Relief purges any trapped air during filter operation.

  5. Single Element Cartridge is engineered of high-quality reinforced polyester, with gasketed molded end caps, for maximum efficiency, easier cleaning and longer life.

  6. Precision-Engineered Extruded Core provides extra strength and superior flow.

  7. Elevated Filtered Water Collector and Debris Sump prevents accidental by-pass of heavy debris to pool or spa when cartridge is removed for cleaning.

  8. 1.5" or 2" FIP, or 2" SKT Connections for plumbing versatility.

  9. .5" FIP Filter Drain for fast draining. Also accepts standard spigot valve.
Cartridge Filter Cutaway
Cartridge filtration has been available for a relatively long time, but has only recently begun to enjoy rapid growth and acceptance.

When water passes through a cartridge filter, dirt is screened out at the surface of the cartridge element. When clean, the element will trap larger particles, with finer particles being filtered out as the pores of the element become clogged by the larger debris. The cartridge element can be removed and cleaned by pressure washing inside and out with a garden hose.

There are three popular methods of filtration – Sand, Cartridge, and Diatomaceous Earth (D.E).

Sand
In this method, impurities are extracted from the water utilizing sand to collect and attract the debris. Sand filters must be backwashed (running it in reverse) to unload the water waste. This is a manual process that must be performed every few weeks.

Cartridge
Cartridge filters have a greater surface area than sand allowing for smaller particles of debris to be trapped and filtered. Cartridge filters are designed to run at lower pressure than sand which puts less backpressure on the pump, providing more flow and turnover. Correctly sized cartridge filters should be cleaned once or twice a season by simply hosing them off.

DE
Diatomaceous earth is mined and is the fossilized exoskeletons of tiny diatoms. This method of filtration is the most effective by trapping debris as small as 2 - 5 microns. Once the pressure rises, the filter is backwashed just like a sand filter and then "recharged" with more DE powder.
